2019 Panini Legacy Set Review
Panini Legacy was a new addition to Panini’s football card lineup and released for the first time in May, 2019.
The 200 card set is contains a mix of current stars, retired veterans, and a whole host of rookies including Kyler Murray, Daniel Jones, and Gardner Minshew II. As an early season release, the rookies are all pictured in their college uniforms. Many have compared the set to Panini Classics, and it appears that Legacy actually replaced Classics in the Panini product mix. It appears the 40 card legends subset is somewhat short printed, and the rookies fall about two per pack on average.
A typical hobby box will also contain approximately ten insert cards from five different insert sets. Timeless Talents, Record Book, Lasting Legacies, For the Ages, and Fan Favorites are all centered on the “Legacy” aspect of the product and feature current and retired players. There are no rookies in any of the insert sets.
A whopping 266 different autograph or autograph relic cards are available, and each of those also have serial numbered parallels. Hits come two per hobby box, with boxes selling for about $80 each.
I did not open any Legacy, but I did buy a collection containing approximately 2,000 cards from this set. I put away one complete set for my PC and have listed the rest of them on Sportlots! I like the design and physical feel of the cards, and it somewhat reminds me of the sets from the early 90s. It’s not overly glossy, has quality photos, and still feels like cardboard in your hands.
Here’s a few photo’s showing the base set design of the veterans, legends, and rookies as well as each of the inserts.
As the 2019 got underway, singles of the popular rookies were selling for $1-$3 on Ebay and Sportlots, and complete sets were selling for around $40. Sealed boxes can be found for $70-$80. Overall, the secondary market seems pretty strong for an entry level product which is a positive sign. I’ve sold singles consistently over the first few months that I’ve had them listed.
This turned out to be a pretty strong release for Panini’s first go at it. Legacy provides a nice checklist and some fun inserts to track down for a reasonable price point. If this was a mid or late season release with the rookies in pro uniforms, it would the the ideal product in my mind.
