2019 Topps 582 Montgomery Club Set #3 - 1972 Posters

In November 2018, Topps announced a new exclusive club collectors could join for $199 which would guarantee them access to six products over the course of the next year as part of the membership fee.  The name 582 Montgomery Club is derived from the Topps address in its early days in Brooklyn.  The products will reflect long lost  designs which were never utilized for one reason or another.

In early June, the third of six sets was shipped to collectors! I first wrote about the Topps 582 Montgomery Club here, and followed up with a review of the second set as well.

It’s now time to take a look at this third set which was inspired by a 1972 poster design.  It also looks very similar to the 1989 Topps football design which makes me wonder if that design was also based on this unreleased 1972 poster.

The 20 card checklist of this third set consists of superstars, young up and comers, and rookies.  Each member received a complete 20 card set and an additional random autograph, although some collectors indicated their sets were missing the autographed card.  It appears autographs of all 20 players on the checklist were possible, however it seems some players are found more often than others.

Some collectors took advantage of a glitch on the topps.com website which allowed them to “reorder” this set once it showed up as “processing” in their account screen.  Several members confirmed receipt of multiple sets by using this loophole.

I’m not sure how this passed internal Topps controls since the number of memberships is capped.  I would have thought someone would have said, “Wait, don’t we have X number of 582 Montgomery Club memberships?  Why do we have X + Y orders of set 3?”.

So far the value of the Montgomery Club sets on the secondary market has been strong.  Halfway through the first year of membership, each of the first three sets are selling between $40-$100 each.  The two autographed cards received in set 1 and set 3 add even more value.

Topps could do even more with this club to really make it something special (especially from a communication perspective), but I am still very pleased with my membership so far.  I’m looking forward to the final three releases!
