Every kid I knew growing up dreamed of finding an old treasure map. Rumors of abandoned houses, sunken boats on the river, and old mines in the hillside were whispered from kid to kid.

When The Goonies released in the summer of 1985, it gave us another adventure to connect to. Well, to celebrate the 39th(?) anniversary of the film, Upper Deck released a new set of cards during the summer of 2024!

Here’s the Story

The 2024 Upper Deck Goonies set was released via their “e-Pack” platform. Over the course of 10 weeks, packs were purchased digitally via upperdeckepack.com and then the physical cards could be transferred to COMC.com and sent to you at a later date.

The base set consisted of 50 cards, with each one picturing a scene from the film. A paragraph on the back of the card describes the action. One of the insert sets was a Black and White parallel which added an additional 20 scenes. Ultra rare 1/1 printing plate parallels were also randomly included in packs.

An insert set featuring 10 prominent characters is also available in standard and “gold parallel” forms. The standard character insert has the highest print run of the product with 1,499 copies. The gold parallel is limited to 499 copies. The base cards are actually the most limited cards you could find in packs. There are some Achievement cards which are more limited, but I’ll get to that in a second.

In each of the 10 weeks, Upper Deck released 1,985 packs. Each pack contained 1 base card, and there were 5 new base cards available each week. The math indicates there were fewer than 400 of each base card created.

Everyone Loves a Treasure Hunt!

Collectors also had the opportunity to hunt down some additional achievement cards. By completing a handful of collecting achievements(one for each base, insert, and parallel set), they were able to claim five additional “Astoria Achievements” cards.

Collect enough of the achievements, and you could redeem them for an even more limited Never Say Die Diamond Relic, Rich Stuff Doubloon Relic, or a special hand drawn Sketch Card. These Achievement Relics command a premium on eBay.

I was able to find all 95 cards, including the achievement cards on COMC.com. They ranged from about .25 to $10 each depending on what you’re looking for and when you look. You can also search for sets and singles on eBay.
