2018 Topps Update Set Review and Box Break
Opening boxes of Topps Update while watching playoff baseball has become one of my favorite things to do, and this year is shaping up to be one of the funnest breaks in quite some time.
It is hard to describe this release as anything but stacked! The 300 card base set checklist is loaded and has the first full print flagship cards of Gleyber Torres, Ronald Acuna Jr., and Juan Soto. Yes, I know Torres and Acuna had short print RCs in Series 2, but the update versions will still be in demand. Many of the mid-season trades were also included. Manny Machado in Dodgers gear and Cole Hamels in Cubs gear are the two I’m most excited about.
The insert and autograph checklists are also loaded up. There are only a handful of players that would be disappointing pulls. All the major stars have insert cards, and most of them also have potential autos to pull.
The bonus Silver Packs have been a huge value add over the last two years, and they are included with Update for the first time this season! I once again had 24 packs to open and made a video of me busting 12 of those for the YouTube audience.
This was one of my “Two Case Specials” and I got to bust a bunch of jumbo boxes. I decided on holding off selling my second case and I couldn’t be happier with the results. Check out one of those boxes below!
In addition to the goodness you just saw, here are a couple of the hits I pulled: A Juan Soto Black Parallel /67 and a Ozzie Albies Gold Auto!
After hours and hours of sorting, I ended up a few insert cards short of a master set and I was able to trade with a friend to finish it up! I’ll keep that for the PC and I have an additional 9 base sets to sell off. Production was way up, around 50% it looks like, but with the checklist of this set, I think it has the potential to have some long term value. You should be able to pick up a base set pretty reasonably in the initial “race to the bottom” that is typically seen during release week, but after that I think it will start ticking back up over time.
This was a ton of fun to bust and I’m already looking forward to 2019!
Let me know what you think of the set in the comments below! Please take a second to subscribe to the blog and the YouTube channel and I’ll catch you next time….
