Let's talk about Sets!
I'm continuing to make progress on the collection, but I've still got a ways to go. I moved onto the plastic bins you saw stacked in the first blog post, and as I started to open them, I uncovered a hoard of complete and near complete sets!
There are about 25 complete sets, around 15 near complete sets which are missing 5-10 cards, and about another 25 small oddball sets. I already have several of them from the early 90s, so I'll probably looking to move those to help offset some of the cost of the collection. However, there are several that I don't have and will make great additions to my PC.
Here are a few of my favorites:
5) 1995 Tombstone Pizza Set
I had never seen this set until now. The 30 card set contains several superstars including Griffey Jr., Cal RIpken Jr., Ozzie Smith, and Tony Gwynn. The design is fairly basic, but I still kind of like it.
4) 1997 Upper Deck Crunch Time Basketball
This was another promotional set between Upper Deck and Nestle which was included in certain packages of Nestle Crunch Bars. This 40 card set allowed me to add several new cards of guys llke Kobe, Jordan, and Iverson.
3) 1994 Studio Baseball
I really like the looks of this set. Each card features a bright portrait of a player sitting in from of their locker. Most show their jersey hanging in the background, and the combination of team colors just make the photos stand out.
2) 1995 Stadium Club Super Team
There was a promotion which allowed collector's to redeem a contest card if the team on the card won the World Series. The redemption gave them a special factory set with each card having a special commemorative foil stamp on it. The thing I like most about it is the World Series Stamp adds a bit of uniqueness of an otherwise widely available base set. Also, as I understand it, the redemptions were actually part of the 1994 set, but since there was no World Series that year due to the strike shortened season, the redemption was honored in 1995.
1) 1984 Donruss!
The 1984 Donruss set was missing from my collection until now! Actually, I guess it will still be missing for a couple more weeks because this is one of the partial sets I found. It is missing 10 common cards, and I should be able to pick those up for a few bucks and will be able to check another classic 80's set off my want list! I love the look of the Sandberg, Mattingly, and Ripken Jr., and there's something about that yellow wave that makes this set stand out.
Collecting sets is one of my original loves, and this collection will both fill some holes and give me some extra's to sell at my local shows or ebay. Quite a few of these 90's sets are only worth $5 to $10, but there are still many collector's who appreciate them!
Read Part 1 of the Series where I recount how I was able to obtain this car load of cards here.
Part 3 will highlight some of the other nicer cards I've uncovered included several Kobe's, Jordan's, and Griffeys!
