2019 Topps Pro Debut Set Review, Box Break, and Checklist

Michael Sommer May 23, 2019

Bowman may get the most hype of the Minor League Focused baseball card products, but they aren’t the only game in town.  Topps Pro Debut is the second release of the season which focuses on the stars of tomorrow.  The 2019 version released on May 22nd, and the hobby only release delivered 24 packs per box with eight cards in each pack.

Set Review

Once again, the card’s design mimics the Topps flagship design with the addition of the Pro Debut logo on some cards which indicates it is their first Pro Debut card (think 1st Bowman).  Parallels come in a variety of colors starting with Green /99, Gold /50, Orange /25, Red /10, and Black 1/1s.  The 200 card base set is packed with prospects, some of which were already been called up to the bigs early in the 2019 season.  Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Pete Alonso, Fernando Tatis Jr., and Nick Senzel are a few of the bigger names who have graduated from MiLB prospect to major league rookie.

Wander mania finds its way into this product as card #50 pictures the current class A ball player on his Princeton rookie ball team.  Joey Bart, Nolan Gorman, and Casey Mize are a couple other notable guys who make the list of prospects for collectors to chase.

Five insert sets can be found with checklists ranging from one card (2019 Make Your Pro Debut Winner) to 25 cards (MiLB Leaps and Bounds).  The Ben’s Biz set returns for another year and shows some fun that can be found in five MiLB cities.  The Pro Debut 10 Year Anniversary Reprint Set promises to deliver micro heart attacks to collectors as they briefly forget it’s actually a reprint and not the original ProDebut card of Bryce Harper, Francisco Linder, Kris Bryant, Mookie Betts, or Mike Trout.  I don’t know about you, but those reprints get me every time.  I enjoy the Promotional Night uniforms set as it continues with the “fun at the ballpark” theme.

Each hobby box contains two autographs and two relic cards.  There are 75 different subjects on the base autograph checklist.  The Future Cornerstones auto checklist contained a more focused list of 24 players and each card is numbered to 99 or less and should fall one per case.  Jumbo Patch Auto Relics, MiLB Leaps and Bounds Autos, and Pro Debut 10-year Anniversary Autos round out the potential signatures.

Vlad Jr., Wander, and Pete are a few of the notable names in the product!

Vlad Jr., Wander, and Pete are a few of the notable names in the product!

Distinguished Debut Medallions are thankfully the only manufactured relic in the product and for some reason have Gold, Red, and Black parallels.  I’m just not a big fan of these cards with metal logos that were only created for these cards.  I’m a much bigger fan of the unique memorabilia found in the Fragments of the Farm set!  The Jumbo Patch and Promo Night Uniform relics provide an opportunity to get a piece of uniform.

I opened two boxes on release day including the box I recorded for the video below!

In the box I didn’t record, I pulled the Casey Mize 1/1 pictured above! My other autos were not overly notable, but I did get another numbered to /50. All in all, it was a pretty fun break.  I locked in a good preorder price, so I saved quite a bit off of the full retail release price which always helps from a return of value perspective.  Two boxes should be enough to hand collate a set, but you can buy a complete set shipped to your door for less than the price of one hobby box.  So if maximizing value is on your mind, that’s the way to go.

In last year’s Pro Debut break I landed another huge auto, you can read about it here.  If you can’t get enough coverage of MiLB products, you can check out my review of 2019 Bowman!

Thanks for reading.
