ProSet is Back!
Brian Gray from Leaf Trading Cards has purchased the Pro Set brand and has begun releasing cards using the classic 1989 ProSet football design.
According to an interview on Sports Card Live with Jeremy Lee, Brian acquired the license in early 2021 from someone who had been using it since ProSets bankruptcy to occasionally release bird photos. Yes, that’s right, it was used for over two decades to make bird cards!
Only weeks after the acquisition, Leaf has begun releasing 2021 Football Draft pick cards as an on-demand product directly on the Leaf Trading Cards website. Trevor Lawrence was the first card and sold a whopping 57,111 cards. 56,111 of them were standard cards, and 1,000 reverse negative variations were produced and randomly inserted into orders. Each subsequent card also has a limited number of “variations”.
Cards for Devonta Smith and Justin Fields were up next, and more are expected to be released in the coming weeks. I will continue to update this article to include an ongoing photo checklist with print runs as new cards are released. It turns out the on-demand offerings are not just for football. Bryson Dechambeau was released in late March and continued the numbering as card 9. Therefore, I am including it in the set! The fourth wave went a step farther and added baseball and basketball to the mix. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Giannis came in the fourth wave and also moved this from a prospects set to a set that includes established stars.
In addition to the base cards, autographed versions have been released with were limited to 99 copies.
So what else can we expect?
During the interview, Brian indicated packaged products will be following later this year. Pro Set Metal will be a premium product, and planning is underway for how the brand can be leveraged in the hockey and baseball markets as well. Leaf also plans to create a Pro Set buyback product as well. It seems the early interest in the brand will be leveraged to its fullest extent by Leaf. Do not expect Pro Set to be a “value brand” like it was in the 1900s.
