The second set of the 2021 Topps 582 Montgomery Club released in the spring of 2021.
The 20 cards set featured one of the more interesting “lost designs” we’ve seen so far in the club. Each card included an action shot of the player which was overtop of an outline of the team’s state or province. The team name and logo were inside a pennant on the bottom of the card.

I find the design interesting, however I don’t really like that the player’s name is not included on the front of the card. You have to flip it over to find out who you are holding. It’s not a big deal on a small set like this which is loaded with prominent players, however if this design was used for a full checklist, there would be quite a few guys that would be unfamiliar.
As we typically see with these Montgomery Club releases, the checklist is a mix of rookies, veterans, and retired legends. This time we get ten vets, four rookies, and six legends including Stan Musial. I believe this is the first time we’ve seen him in a Montgomery Club set. I wish Topps would have more diversity of teams represented in these small sets. The White Sox, Dodgers, Yankees, Giants, and Phillies all have two players in the set. I don’t really think we need to double up in a product like this, and a more broad representation would make the set appeal to more fans.
I’ll also continue to ask Topps to share more about the design. What year was it from, why was it not used in the past, what products were they considering it for, etc. Stories sell. Tell more stories!
